ChatGPT: SMS code not received
ChatGPT sign-up stops at phone verification. Half of readers' questions are a silent code, the other half "this phone number is not supported". Causes below, one common fix: a physical-SIM number from a supported country.
Why OpenAI rejects a number
- Virtual range. VoIP numbers, free numbers from public sites and part of corporate ranges are cut off in the form: "this phone number is not supported" appears before any SMS is sent.
- Account limit. One number verifies a limited count of OpenAI accounts. A number that went through several sign-ups gets refused.
- Country of the number. The service works with a list of countries; a number from outside it is rejected. Match the number's country to the account's country.
- SMS delay. The code travels through international gateways; 1–3 minutes of delay is normal. Requesting again too early cancels the first code.
Code is silent: what to do, in order
One request, wait three minutes. Second request after five minutes, not earlier. A third refusal in a row means a number problem, not a network one: further attempts are pointless, take another number.
A simple number check: a code from any other service to the same phone. Arrived in half a minute — the number is alive, the refusal comes from OpenAI.
Which number works for ChatGPT
A physical-SIM number, a country from the supported list, a clean history without mass sign-ups. Such a number is accepted the first time and the code arrives within a minute.
An account with a subscription or work chats is better kept on a rental: OpenAI asks for the number again on a new device, a password change, suspicious activity. A one-time code cannot provide that — the number goes to the next customer within minutes.
