Instagram: verification code not received

The code request goes out, the phone stays silent, and "resend" a minute later gives the same result. That is what five different causes look like, and each is fixed differently. One by one below.

Five reasons the SMS stays silent

• Request limit. Three or four taps on "resend code" in a row block sending for hours. A 12–24 hour pause lifts the block without contacting support.
• Virtual number. Instagram knows VoIP ranges; SMS to them goes out least of all. Free numbers from public sites fall into the same bucket.
• Number already in use. One number holds a limited count of accounts. A relative's old account or a resold SIM takes the slot; the new owner's code is delayed or refused.
• Country mismatch. The account was created under one country, the login comes from a number of another. Checks get stricter and some codes vanish.
• Carrier issue. Some carriers filter short sender IDs. Easy check: a code from any other service to the same phone arrives without delay.

Login on a new phone

The most common case in readers' questions: new phone, the app asks for SMS confirmation, the message never comes. Password known, email accessible, number unchanged. Instagram is checking the device here and allows only a few requests. One rule: one request, wait up to five minutes, then switch to "code by email" or a backup code saved in advance in security settings.

Repeated taps make it worse: every new prompt cancels the previous code, and the attempt counter keeps growing.

Signing up a new account

Sign-up is stricter than login. The number is checked by its history: mass registrations, complaints from previous owners, virtual range. A clean number on a physical SIM passes the first time; the code arrives in 10–40 seconds.

An account for a business, a shop or creative work lives for years and needs its number again: phone change, suspicious login, password recovery. A one-time code fails here: within minutes the number goes to the next customer. Such an account is kept on a rented number with an extendable term.
